I’ve Been Living Under a Rock, What is the World Cup?

Here’s a quick overview of how the World Cup Tournament is formatted:

Group Stage – June 12 – June 26
There are 32 teams taking part in the World Cup and the teams have been arranged into 8 groups consisting of 4 teams per group.
The 4 teams in each group will play a round robin format and the first and second place teams in each group will move on to the Knockout Round.

Knockout Round June 28 – July 13
The Knockout Round is a single elimination tournament for the top 16 teams from the Group Stage. The knockout round culminates in a Consolation Final for 3rd place on July 12th and the Championship Final on July 13th.

How do I make my Picks?
You will be making picks for the Group Stage, the Knockout Tournament and selecting one country that will be used in the event of a tie breaker. All picks must be submitted by June 12th at 4pm.

Group Stage Picks
Pool participants will have to pick who they think will be the winner and runner-up in each of the 8 Groups. One point will be awarded for each correct pick at the end of the Group Stage.

You must pick them in the correct order!

Consolation Game Picks
You will pick the team that you predict will win the consolation game and the team that you think will be the runner-up. 2 points will be awarded for each correct pick

Championship Game Picks
You will pick the team that you predict will win the championship game and the team that you think will be the runner-up. 2 points will be awarded for each correct pick

Tie-Breaker Pick
You must pick one team that you think will score the most goals in the tournament. ***This cannot be one of the four teams that you picked for the Consolation and Championship Games***

In the event of a tie we will look at the Tie Breaker Pick – the team with the most goals for will be used to declare the winner.

What can I win?
Well you’ll certainly be destined to do poorly in any future pools you participate in, just ask Smudge about that curse…
50% of the pool entries will go to the Gaels and 50% of the pool entries will be paid out to the winners.
There will be two prizes awarded and they could even go to the same person.
25% of the winnings will go to the person with the most points at the end of the Group Stage
75% of the winnings will be awarded to the person with the most total points (Group+Knockout) at the end of the tournament.
