Ottawa Gaels Named 2018 Overseas Club of the Year in Irish News GAA Awards

The Ottawa Gaels are pleased to announce that they are the winners of the Irish News Overseas Club of the Year for 2018. Each year, the Irish News GAA Awards recognize club, school and volunteers initiatives that make a difference in their community across four categories of awards. The awards program has operated for sixteen years and the Overseas Club of Year award was added four years ago. This year’s awards luncheon and ceremony was held May 25th, 2018 at the Wellington Park Hotel in Belfast where there were close to 100 school and club representatives in attendance. Our own PRO Kerry Mortimer was honoured to attend the ceremony to accept the award on behalf of our club. There were several special guests in attendance including the Chairman of the Irish News, Jim Fitzpatrick, St Mary’s College University Principal, Peter Finn and former Tyrone GAA star Conor Gormley. Also present were several representatives from the event sponsors that included the Irish News, Ulster GAA, O’Neill’s and Volunteer Now. Our club has been passionate in its campaign to develop and deliver Gaelic Games at the grassroots level and beyond; within club, school, and community programs.  Through the dedicated efforts of our committee, volunteers, club coaches, and Games Development Officer, we continue to promote the GAA in Canada’s capital, engaging both Canadian-born as well as the Irish diaspora in Ottawa. An ocean may separate our club from those in the thick of the GAA environment in Ireland, but passion for sport and community engagement is universal. The ability of a GAA club to create remarkable community spirit transcends boundaries, borders, and distance.
