Rosemary O’Brien, a Professor of Irish Language in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at uOttawa will kick off the week by offering an Irish language class aimed at beginners. So whether you wish learn the cúpla focal, or brush up on your cúpla focal, this class is for you!

Biography
Rosemary O’Brien is a Professor of Irish Language in the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at uOttawa. She has been an active member in the Irish community in Ottawa for too many years to count. Rosemary has a great grá for the Irish language.

Lecture by Máirtín Coilféir- Irish Abroad: Language, Literature, and Cultural Exchange
An Ghaeilge, Irish, is the oldest written vernacular of Western Europe. It is a language with vast literary resources, from an unusually rich early-medieval corpus down to contemporary fiction and poetry, internationally celebrated. It also has a long and storied tradition of engaging with other literatures and other cultures, particularly through (outward) emigration and (inward) translation. Yet, for all that, the global dimensions of modern Irish literature remain largely unmeasured.
In this lecture, Máirtín Coilféir, Assistant Professor of the Irish Language and its Cultures at Concordia University, Montréal, will take a closer look at how Irish literature in the twentieth century interacted with the languages and cultures of the wider world. Taking as his focus a state-sponsored project of creative translation, he will offer some ideas on how we might begin to reframe our understanding of Irish as a language of the world and a medium of cross-cultural exchange.

Biography
Máirtín Coilféir is from Navan, County Meath, Ireland, and is Assistant Professor of the Irish Language and its Cultures in Concordia University, Montréal. Having previously worked in the University of Toronto; University College, Dublin; and the National University of Ireland, Galway, his teaching and research focuses on contemporary literature, translation, and creative writing. A writer himself, his poems have appeared in The Stinging Fly, Gorse, and Poetry Ireland Review, as well as the anthology Calling Cards, which was published by the Gallery Press last year and includes English translations by Paul Muldoon. Máirtín’s first monograph, Titley, was published in 2019 and shortlisted for the Irish-language Book of the Year award.

Comedy Irish Lesson, Áine Gallagher

Áine Gallagher is not only an award winning Irish comedian, but also Ireland’s only unqualified guerilla Irish language teacher. She has achieved serious success in recent years, performing at international festivals including the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and being the subject of the award winning documentary ‘Grá & Eagla’. She is now recognised as a leading Irish language advocate, as she shares her own experiences of learning the language to make it accessible to all. With her unique and deadpan style, she has been hailed as ‘the queen of the offbeat’, and she is paving her way as one of Ireland’s most original comics.

We will be hosting a Ciorcal Comhrá (conversation circle) for speakers with a basic/beginner level of Irish. We invite you to come online to a Zoom call, and chat with people with the same basic level of Irish as you. This informal conversation circle will be moderated by Rút Ní Theimhneáin, and will be a great chance to practice the cúpla focal and connect with other Irish speakers across Canada

This informal conversation circle will be moderated by Scott Oser of Ciorcal Comhrá Vancouver, and will be a great chance to practice your Irish and connect with other Irish speakers across Canada.

Biography
Scott Oser is a professor of physics at the University of British Columbia, and has won several scientific awards throughout his career. He learned Irish while a graduate student in the US, and founded Ciorcal Comhrá Vancouver in 2009 to provide local Irish speakers a chance to keep up and improve their Irish. An amateur translator, Scott was awarded a literary prize at the 2019 Oireachtas competition for his Irish translation of the Buddhist Dhammapada.
