Bring out your kids – all ages welcome – to learn how to play this fast paced and exciting sport. The game draws on skills and aspects from many sports including soccer, basketball, volleyball and football. We are excited to have Angela Stevenson and Emmett Stewart, two highly qualified coaches from Ireland to run our youth program. The sport is offered in the high school Phys Ed curriculum in Gr 7 & 8 at the Ottawa Catholic School Board and is gaining more traction in the City. The demand for Gaelic Football in Ottawa continues to grow. In addition to our September sessions scheduled in Kanata and at Pierre Elliott Trudeau School in Hull, the Ottawa Gaels will be offering fall youth Gaelic Football sessions in Riverside South. The weekly sessions are scheduled for 3 Monday nights starting September 8th at field at St. Francis Xavier High School. The program will introduce basic skills to kids who are new to the sport and refresh skills for those who have tried it before. There will be fun games and scrimmages that will help kids learn this exciting sport. The 3 week program culminates in the Mike Robinson Tournament on Saturday, September 27th. The Ottawa Gaels are going to run a four week program on Thursday nights in Kanata leading up to the Mike Robinson Tournament. The program will be primarily games with a review of skills. The Ottawa Gaels are the only Canadian Gaelic Athletic Association club that has participated in all ten Continental Youth Championship (CYC) tournaments. At times it has been difficult to maintain momentum but this year was our banner year. We had 33 athletes from 19 families who traveled to New York City to help commemorate the 100th anniversary of Gaelic football in New York. Additionally, we traveled with Jerome Quinn of Jerome Quinn Media, to help capture the Ottawa Gaels experience at the CYC in this landmark year. We also were accompanied by Thomas Murphy our Ulster Council and Canadian County Board sponsored coach, who has been here in Ottawa for the last 3 months.
